What's your story? How and when did you begin following Christ?

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Come as you are. That’s the best way to describe your next step. Jesus knows your heart. He sees your thoughts and intentions and will help guide you.

My journey to Christ did not start in the traditional Christian, church-going home. My parents did bring me up believing that the Bible was true, not just a book of fairy tales, but neither of them, at the time, really "got" what Jesus' sacrifice was all about.

I was a scientist in a farming community. I wasn't able to go out & play like my peers during most of the year, so I was obese as well. I felt not only unloved, but unlovable.

In the 7th grade, I read Chariots of the Gods by Erik Von Dänniken. Even though it seemed silly to some, it offered a way to reconcile "science" with the Bible.

On September 23, 1977, I was "encouraged" to go to a Christian tent meeting. I was "encouraged" in the way that loving non-argumentative mothers "encourage" people; my response was something along the lines of, "alright, if it'll get you off my back!" The speaker was Harold Hill, once a popular author. What engaged me was that he was a physicist who, as I thought of it at the time, "believed this God business." He spoke of "salvation," but never explained what he meant. I was completely unfamiliar with the term.

From that point forward, a war waged inside my head. I was suddenly aware of a real God who, as hard to believe as it was, actually loved me, but I was also aware of how "silly" that seemed to be from a scientific sense. It was as if there were two personalities in me, arguing on a regular basis.

The next big event came on Memorial Day Sunday, 1978. I was "channel surfing" -- or as close as one could do with a mechanical tuner -- when I came across The Old-Time Gospel Hour. To this day I don't recall why I stopped, or at least why I decided to stop there, or at least what went through my head ... but I stopped there. Finally Dr. Jerry Falwell explained to me what "salvation" was all about. Sitting there in my room that night, I asked Jesus into my heart and life.
